There are roughly 1,200 companies in the world that generate more than $1 billion in annual profit. About one in ten of them exists solely to trade securities (think Jane Street and Citadel). Trading firms have historically been exceptionally good businesses.
They have also been extraordinarily difficult to build. Two barriers stand out: infrastructure and human capital.
The infrastructure alone is daunting. Data ingestion systems, simulation engines, and real-time risk models have accumulated over decades into millions of lines of highly specialized code. Replicating that foundation has historically required enormous amounts of capital, engineering talent, and time.
Then there are the people.
The very best firms have assembled teams of exceptional second-order thinkers – mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and statisticians. Dozens or even hundreds of these researchers work in parallel: forming hypotheses, designing experiments, writing code, running simulations, analyzing results, discarding failed ideas, and feeding successful discoveries back into a broader investment system.
For decades, the only way to build both was brute force: more engineers, more researchers, more capital, more time.
We believe AI changes this and that both historic moats can now be challenged in new ways.
Enter Owen Colegrove and Event Horizon Labs.
Owen began his career as a particle physicist, earning a PhD and working on collider experiments at CERN. He then moved into quantitative investing at Citadel, where he saw firsthand how one of the world’s most sophisticated investment organizations approaches research, infrastructure, and systematic decision-making. More recently, he has immersed himself in AI engineering and the rapidly advancing capabilities of modern models.
Very few people sit at the intersection of those three worlds: fundamental scientific research, elite quantitative investing, and frontier AI engineering.
Event Horizon Labs is what that intersection makes possible: thousands of agent swarms running 24/7, building advantaged infrastructure while simultaneously exploring and testing investment strategies.
The result could be a fundamentally different kind of organization that is smaller, faster, more experimental, and capable of exploring a far larger research surface area than its headcount would suggest.
There is still an enormous amount to prove. But we believe Event Horizon Labs has the opportunity to build one of the first great investment firms designed around the new reality of AI.
